Measuring the performance of a centenary class tram on the Blackpool Tramway

Measurements from a real system are vital to validate any modelling work conducted. This paper describes measurements made on the Blackpool Tramway to analyse the energy consumed by a vehicle and assess the voltage regulation on the system. Modelling of such systems is becoming widespread to optimise power use and plan for maximum vehicle capacity. The research highlights the input of the driver's behaviour on energy profiles and the importance of including this in subsequent analysis. It also shows the potential value of energy storage either on tram or track side to improve voltage regulation and increase track capacity.
