Intelligent route guidance. Thesis Delft University of Technology.

This dissertation research has dealt with the topic of researching and designing a dynamic route guidance system (DRGS). A DRGS is a system that provides drivers on a (motorway) network with route guidance advice. A DRGS can be used as a means to better utilize existing infrastructure by both public or private parties. In this research a series of functional requirements have been formulated which the DRGS must fulfill. The requirements are partly based on lessons learned from past research efforts, partly based on the specific Dutch situation and partly based on the trend that route guidance is a service that can be offered by both private and public parties and the DRGS should therefore be usable by both. Based on a review of thirty years of research into DRGS it was found that no previous research effort satisfied the initial requirements. It was therefore concluded to design a new DRGS from scratch.
