Performance comparison of mobile-assisted network-controlled and mobile-controlled handoff signaling for TDMA PCS with an ATM backbone

This paper investigates the performance of mobile assisted network-controlled handoff signaling (GSM/DCS1900-like) and compares it with that of mobile-controlled handoff signaling (PACS-like) for TDMA (time division multiple access) PCS (personal communications services) with an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) backbone. It is found that when the overall signaling load is low, PACS has shorter handoff delays than GSM/DCS1900; when the overall signaling load is high, GSM/DCS1900 has shorter handoff delays than PACS.
