Higher Order Sliding Mode Control of Integrated Fin/Rudder of a Ship

This paper deals with the integrated fin/rudder control of a ship by both sliding mode control and super-twisting algorithm. A real time disturbance model keeping an eye on different conditions on the sea is used for validating the control strategy. The effect of the continuous nature of the super-twisting algorithm on the system performance is compared with the conventional first order sliding mode control, which is not reported yet in the literature. The simulation results for different cases of sea conditions are studied and it shows the better performance of the super-twisting algorithm with respect to conventional sliding mode control.
