Promoting Low Carbon Transport in India: NMT Infrastructure in India: Investment, Policy and Design

This document looks at policies and infrastructure investments designed to promote non-motorized transport (NMT) in India. It begins with a discussion of trends in walking, bicycling and rickshaw trips from the 1980s to 2010. There is also a discussion of fatal crash rate and NMT users. Design specifications necessary to safely move pedestrians and bicyclists are outlined. A review of current projects to improve NMT infrastructure looks at street improvements in Nanded, reducing travel time in Bangalore City, and bus rapid transit (BRT) projects in nine Indian cities. A closer look at the safety, accessibility, and travel time of the BRT corridor in Delhi is also included. In addition, infrastructure design case studies from The Netherlands, Denmark, and Bogata, Columbia are examined. The conclusion presents likely reductions in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions due to NMT infrastructure development and policy recommendations.
