A novel architecture for a video-on-demand network

Video material is divided into short segments which are stored in independently accessible memory units. These segments are sent sequentially to the user, one at a time, in high speed bursts over a video distribution network. While one high speed burst is being viewed (at low speed) by one user, the video server can cater to demands from other users. This paper presents some details of a video-on-demand (VoD) system architecture based on the above approach. Analysis and simulations prove the viability and indicate the expected performance for this architecture.
