Theseus, by the way, was not Athens' 'founder' (pp. 31, 177); the myths told of earlier kings before his time (Cecrops, Erechtheus/Erechthonius, Aegeus). Others may find this study more illuminating than I have; there are interesting points e.g. on details of the characterization and 'staging', but the main thrust of the book seems to me misguided.
