Isolation of antibiotics produced in culture by Armillaria mellea

Four chloroform-soluble antibiotic substances were produced in culture by Armillaria mellea (Vahl ex Fr.) Kummer when rhizomorphs were formed in potato-dextrose broth. The antibiotics were extracted from the culture fluid and fungal vegetative structures of young and old cultures representing seventeen A. mellea clones. The antibiotic compounds were both antifungal and antibacterial against Gram-positive bacteria. One of the antibiotics has been partially identified and appears to be a phenolic compound. Further studies are in progress.
