Overview of Raster Graphics Hardware

Raster graphics display systems offer a wide variety of capabilities, features, speeds, and interfaces. Raster architectures and display processers are rapidly maturing to enable faster generation of more complex objects, higher-resolution displays, and more bit-planes for better color. This development is possible largely by more powerful micro-processors and cheaper memory. Hardware is available for fast generation of solid objects. One of the most dominant trends is the development of workstations, which provide integrated software environment with high-bandwidth graphical I/O as the standard user interface.
