Application of CNG in transportation sector: A review of the current status of technology and future projections

The rapid depletion of petroleum fuel, and ever rising costs have forced engineers to search for alternative fuels for the use in IC engines. With an abundant supply and cleaner exhaust, CNG has great potential as a substitute of petroleum fuels. CNG can also play vital role in relieving the fuel crisis worldover as a future source of energy as well as cleaner fuel. Full replacement of petrol in petrol engine with CNG is not a problem but in the case of diesel engine it gives various problems in operation and hence extensive research work is necessary in this field for full replacement of diesel with CNG. In this paper, some research work on the use of CNG in C I and S I engines at national and international scenarios have been reported.
