Quantifying uncertainty in reliability and safety studies

Abstract The paper discusses the extent to which the quantification of reliability and safety of engineering systems can be considered to be credible and useful, and the reasons why the standard methods normally used can be misleading. The problem is discussed in relation to prediction and to measurement, for hardware, software and human aspects of engineering systems. Suggestions are made for improving the credibility and value of reliability and safety predictions and measurements.
