Digital imaging in pathology

Abstract We discuss the potential usefulness of digital imaging within the District General Hospital pathology department. We conclude that digital imaging has progressed to the point that there are no significant technical limitations to prevent it replacing traditional photography for most applications in pathology. The case for implementing a simple digital imaging system in the cut-up room and coupled to the microscope is presented. The state of the art in digital imaging applied to pathology is described including a review of current digital cameras and their applications. The advantages and disadvantages of digital image technology are considered, together with issues concerning the equipment and software necessary for creating a useful system.
