Calcium-activated non-specific cation channels

Abstract Calcium-activated non-specific cation (CAN) channels are found in a broad range of cells, including cardiac cells, secretory cells, and neurons. Single channel recordings indicate that these channels have a single channel conductance of about 30 pS, have a Ca 2+ sensitivity of 10 −6 m or lower, and are not selective among numerous cations. CAN channels appear to be a unique class of channels with an important role in excitation—secretion coupling and in determining neuron firing patterns.
