SUMMARY The concept of lifelong learning has been much debated, and great strides have been made in the development of work‐based learning. But, while evidence suggests that the majority of organizations recognize the value of delivering learning in the workplace, it tends to be conventional, formal, classroom‐based and concerned with perpetuating existing organizational practice. This paper argues a case for the development of innovative approaches to work‐related learning, using both formal and informal opportunities. This is possible if the work environment is supportive. Two new programmes are described, developed by the university continuing professional development unit, which begin to address these ideas. The paper concludes with a review of some of the outstanding issues which are the basis for two new funded research projects being managed by the unit.
