Characterizing Mode Localization by Symmetry

Small mistuning in bladed-disks can lead to large changes in stability and forced response. This paper presents a general framework for finding forced response as a function of mistuning. Our methods exploit symmetry arguments and eigenstructure perturbation to provide a method valid for any model. In addition, we show that intentional mistuning can guarantee stability and forced response under manufacturing uncertainty. Thus, intentional mistuning may yield robust improved performance and safety and should be considered as a practical design tool.
