Computer-aided process control laboratory systems

This paper presents the use of personal computers in the process control laboratory at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. A description of four control systems interfaced to computers-a flow control system, a level control system, a heated tank control system and a fermenter/batch reactor control system are given. Being versatile controllers and data loggers, the computers also provide a friendly and appealing environment for students to perform experiments on the systems. The different characteristic of each system provides a variety of hands-on experience which incorporates the application of process control and reinforcement of the theories learnt in class. Finally, a sample experiment is included to illustrate the application and experience gained by students.<<ETX>>
