Cities attract people by offering a job and a livable environment. A job provides a kind of status in the society as well as an income to meet the needs of the person. A city means a home to live in, schools for education, hospitals for health problems, police for safety, and a market for daily food requirements. Besides, the city provides opportunities for leisure time activities. Cities are becoming the wealth producing centers of national economies. Increasing the operational efficiency of the city will bring a competitive edge to the whole system. Yet, many city subsystems cannot work together, creating significant problems and inefficiencies. This book uses information science perspectives to improve working subsystems in transportation, sewage, electricity, water, communication, education, health, governance, and infrastructure since their efficient and synchronized operation is vital for a competitive city.
