Measurements of flame length and flame angle in an inclined trench

Abstract Measurements of flame length and flame angle from fire sources mounted in a tiltable trench are reported. The results from three different source configurations are presented and discussed. Empirical correlations between rate of heat release of the fire source and flame length for the experimental configurations have the general form L ∝ Qn. They approximately follow the 2 3 power law applicable two-dimensional buoyant diffusion flames. A very simple analysis can be used to describe qualitatively the relationship between flame angle and angle of tilt of the trench for the fire source in the trench base.
