Neural Symbolic Activity: A Psychophysical Measure

When a subject views a grating which is partially blocked from view by a cube, adaptation (decrease in contrast of the grating) occurs not only to the visible portions of the grating, but also to those portions blocked from view. This may indicate the existence of a neural mechanism which conveys the information "in back of."
