MECHANO-LATTICE PREDICTION OF PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE --PROCEEDINGS OF THE FOURTH CONFERENCE ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA, HELD CAPE SUN HOTEL, CAPE TOWN, REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA, 12-16 MARCH 1984. VOL 1 & VOL 2.

It has been shown by the author, previously, that his mechano-lattice stress-strain analysis of multi-layered elasto-plastic flexible pavements enables residual stress and strain build-up and its effects to be calculated for the life of the road. This build-up results from the variation of plastic behaviour between the various layers of the pavement. This paper shows how the residual stresses and strains influence the rutting and fatigue life of the pavement. It is also shown how the life of the pavement can be maximised by selecting pavement materials for their plastic behaviour as well as for their modulus. Thus, for a given financial outlay on materials the pavement life can be maximised more precisely than previously.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815702.
