Deodorization of Ammoniated Corn by Drying and Other Methods

ABSTRACT CORN treated with ammonia at the levels normally used to inactivate aflatoxin will often need to be deodorized to gain good animal acceptance. Drying the ammoniated corn with one pass of heated air as done in a batch-in-bin grain dryer proved to be more satisfactory than drying with recirculated air. Roasting, steaming, and chemical neutralization also deodorized the corn to a varying degree depending upon the con-ditions used, but the batch-in-drying method appears to be the best overall choice based on effectiveness, relative costs, and utility for use in small-scale oper-ations, such as on the farm.
