The Role of Multiterminal HVDC for Wind Power Transmission and AC Network Support

This paper describes the role of voltage source converter (VSC) based, multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) transmission systems for integrating large offshore wind farms, and for providing dynamic frequency regulation and power oscillation damping to the connected onshore transmission networks. In this paper, offshore converter station and DC cable configuration are brief discussed and main requirements for controlling and operating such MTDC systems are outlined. A three-terminal MTDC system connecting to two different onshore AC systems is simulated specifically for investigating the network support function using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Case studies during system load variation, generation loss, and faults at different network locations, are conducted to verify the improved transmission system performance by the proposed control strategies of the MTDC system.
