Preparation and properties of polymer impregnated concrete

Abstract Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and lauroyl peroxide (LPO) were selected to mix with methyl methacrylate, ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethyacrylate, respectively. Three hundred fifty cylindrical concrete specimens with a constant water/cement ratio of 0.65 were cast and cured. For a given impregnation process, the polymer loadings of impregnated specimens using BPO or LPO as initiator were between 5.2 and 6.5%, and the impregnation depths varied from 15 to 19 mm, depending on the viscosity of the monomer mixture. However, in AIBN specimens full impregnation depth (50 mm) was observed, which resulting from higher activated energy in the monomer mixtures. Mechanical properties of specimen were improved by impregnation. No chloride ions or carbon dioxide passed through most of the impregnated specimens after 600‐hour exposure.
