The paper deals with the geometrically and physically nonlinear description and the numerical simulation of the behavior of water saturated sand under cyclic loading. Based on the theory of mixtures a Lagrangean formulation of the equations of motion and continuity is given for the two-phase system. To describe the nonlinear behavior of sand under loading and unloading an elasto-plastic material law is employed. The material parameters are determined by corresponding experimental investigations.
