FPGA-realization of a novel sliding mode observer for a sensorless PMSM drive

Based on the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), this paper presents an implementation of a sensorless PMSM speed control system which the rotor speed and rotor position are estimated by novel SMO method. The estimated rotor position can be sent back to the current loop for vector control and the estimated rotor speed can be fed back to the speed loop for closed-loop speed control. In realization, the digital hardware IP (Intellectual Property) regarding as the speed controller, the current vector controller and novel SMO algorithm are described by VHDL. Finally, to confirm the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed sensorless speed control IP (Intellectual Property), a design procedure from ModelSim/Simulink co-simulation to FPGA realization is applied and an experimental PMSM drive system is demonstrated.
