The primary objective of this investigation is to develop a system which will detect and locate plastic pipe from 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) to 4 inch (101.6 mm) or more in diameter in all soils, in all conditions, to a depth of 4 feet (1.22 m). In order to develop an instrument for locating buried plastic pipe, Folsom Research, Inc. proposed to investigate (1) ultra-wideband swept-frequency microwave radar, (2) chirp ultrasound for use in soils where the radar attenuation is too high, and (3) ultra-high-speed signal processing.
