The Diagnostic System for Automatic Gauge Control in Hot Strip Mill

Abstract This paper describes the diagnostic system, that presumes the cause of thickness faults in a Hot strip finishing mill Automatic gauge control system. The purpose of this system is to observe the control system on-line, informing the operator in the occurrence of a thickness fault, and in turn diagnosing and presuming the cause of the fault. To guarantee the target accuracy of the product, a finishing mill setup (FSU) function and an Automatic Gauge Control (AGC) system control the finishing mill. The diagnostic system is constructed on a personal computer, being connected on-line to the control system. The system operates by the following stages: (1) Observe the actual collected data. (2) Diagnose whether a thickness fault has occurred. (3) Presume the cause of the thickness fault. In the occurrence of a thickness fault, both fault and cause will be reported. For example, if the thickness of the head end of the strip was too thin, the error and the presumed cause - Skid-Mark would be reported.
