TWO-LANE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC OPERATIONS. THEORY AND PRACTICE

This book deals with the theory and analysis of traffic flow on two lane highways and the engineering treatments which improve flow performance. In an introductory chapter, explanation of terminology used is given. In chapter two, early two lane highway capacity research in the United States, is briefly outlined, including a review of the Bureau of Public Roads capacity studies of the 1930's. Chapter three presents information on the development of the US highway capacity manuals, (for the current 3rd edition see IRRD 288021). The topics in the rest of the book include the mathematical theory of two lane flow, use of computer simulation, empirical speed-flow geometry relations, overtaking behaviour and slow vehicle impedance, emerging new methods for analysing two lane flow and improving flow lane perfomance.
