Malarial Genome Comes Into View

INFECTIOUS DISEASESOn page [1351][1], researchers pinpoint a series of genetic landmarks across the entire 14-chromosome genome of the deadly malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum . It is one of two new maps of the parasite genome unveiled this month; the second, published in the November issue of Nature Genetics , shows a different type of landmark. Researchers say the new maps will be a great help to those working to sequence the parasite's genome; once completed, the sequence may reveal potential targets for antimalaria vaccines or drugs.
