Reciprocity experiments on the transmission of sound in ships

The general reciprocity theorem for linear dynamical systems was formulated by Rayleigh about a century ago (ref. 1.1). Nevertheless, in the fields of acoustics and structural dynamics the principle is not generally accepted as a useful tool and the number of applications is very limited. The limited use of the reciprocity principle is caused mainly by doubts about its validity. Due to the development of the electrical network theory and some recent publications in the acoustical literature it is possible to formulate clearly for which types of systems reciprocity is valid (see chapter 2). Many systems in linear dynamics can be shown to have the characteristics to satisfy the reciprocity theory.
