The authors report a PC-based fiber-optic simulation methodology for the design of lightwave systems for the transmission of high-speed data. The simulation environment can be used in conjunction with other signal processing systems. The fiber transmission and the signal processing subsystems function as a single optimized transmission and processing entity. The authors present the lightwave design software with extensive graphics. The facility offers the designer the simulation results and the steps in the system optimization. The inputs to the fiber simulation are derived from user-selected databases of various vendors. These input databases contain the device characteristics from any number of vendors of any number of devices used in the design of the lightwave systems.<<ETX>>
