Costs for small systems to meet the national interim drinking water regulations

Entries are now being accepted for AWWA's 1983 Academic Achievement Awards. All master's theses and doctoral dissertations relevant to the water supply industry are eligible. The manuscript must reflect the work of a single author and must be submitted for a degree between Sept. 1, 1981 and Sept. 1, 1982. Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 1, 1982. Awards of $1000 will be given for the best thesis and the best dissertation. Second place awards of $500 will be given in both categories. In addition, commemorative plaques will be presented to winners and to their academic advisors at the 1983 AWWA Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas. Winning papers will be considered for publication in JOURNAL AWWA. A total of 45 academic awards have been presented since the award was established in 1966. Winners have come from every region; many have become leaders in the water supply industry. A number of former winners including Sai Hyun Lee, the first woman to receive the award are now university professors. Other notable recipients include Michael J. McGuire, with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; Cliff G. Thompson, with CH2M Hill; Ashok Lagvankar of Harza Engineers; and Francis J. Mangravite of Arco Performance Chemical Co. Several winners who were foreign students have returned to their own countries to work in the water supply field.
