A servo-controlled rheometer for measurement of the dynamic modulus of viscoelastic liquids

A new instrument has been developed for the measurement of the loss and storage moduli of viscoelastic liquids in simple shear as a function of frequency of shearing from 0.1 to 470 c/s. The use of an electromagnetic vibrator with a servo-controlled suspension permits control of the wave form of vibration at amplitudes from 0.00005 to 0.030 in. The effect on the complex dynamic modulus of the superposition of a steady orthogonal shearing may be studied. The results are given of tests on an 8.54% solution of solid polyisobutylene in cetane.
