High-gain broadband patch antenna with a cavity ground for 5-GHz WLAN operation

A novel broadband patch antenna with an equilateral-triangular cavity ground for achieving enhanced antenna gain over a large bandwidth is presented. A constructed prototype covering the 5.2/5.8-GHz (5150–5350/5725–5875 GHz) WLAN bands and showing a high antenna-gain level of about 9.8 dBi is demonstrated. Across the operating band, the prototype also shows good radiation characteristics with reduced cross-polarization and backward radiation.
