The modeling needed for radial distribution systems is made considerably complicated by the consideration of primary distribution feeders that are asymmetrical, multigrounded, supply unbalanced loads, and involve three-phase, two-phase, and single-phase laterals. This paper considers such radial feeders and sets forth for the first time, a new methodology for the determination of optimal sizes, locations, and switching times of fixed and/or nonsimultaneouly switched shunt capacitor installations for maximization of the overall net savings associated with the resultant peak power and energy loss reductions.
