Partial Lexical Knowledge in Tests of Incidental Vocabulary Learning from L2 Reading

This analysis evaluates the receptive tests of targeted lexical knowledge in the written medium, which are typically used in empirical research into lexical acquisition from reading foreign/second language texts. Apart from the types of second language cues or prompts, and the language of the responses, the main issues revolve around: (a) the recognition of partial knowledge, (b) the categorization of different subject responses, in closed and open formats, and (c) their quantification. Variations in response categorizations are questioned in particular on partial lexical knowledge, the capacity for multiple choice formats to cope with partial and correct knowledge, and the conversions of nominal scales to equal interval numerical scales. Cette analyse évalue les tests sur les habiletés réceptives qui visent les connaissances lexicales à l'écrit et qui sont habituellement utilisés dans des recherches empiriques sur les acquisitions lexicales à partir de textes de lecture en langue seconde ou étrangère (L2). Hormis le type de L2 qu'on trouve dans les consignes ou les déclencheurs ou encore dans les réponses suggérées, les enjeux principaux tournent autour de: (a) la reconnaissance des connaissances partielles; (b) la catégorisation des différentes réponses des sujets à des questions ouvertes ou fermées; et (c) leur quantification. Je remets particulièrement en question quelques variantes des catégorisations des réponses par rapport aux connaissances partielles, la capacité de rendre compte des connaissances partielles et de leur justesse à l'aide de questions à choix multiple et la conversion d'échelles nominales en échelles à intervalles égaux.
