This review pertains to the 4th edition of the Haines Neuroanatomy Atlas . This atlas has enjoyed wide-spread acceptance throughout the U .S. and with good reason. The atlas has undergone four revisions in just over 10 years, and each revision reflects considerable work and refinement of an already good product . With the importance of neuroimaging in the clinical setting, the availability of a high-quality atlas, "keyed" in a sense to neuroimaging, is invaluable . In a general sense, the atlas is complete, printed on semiglossy paper, pictures are labeled clearly and accurately, and multicolor has been used on plates depicting vasculature and pathways . Chapters include whole brain morphology, dissections of the C.N.S., structure of the meninges and ventricles, and stained sections of the brain and spinal cord . Furthermore, the book contains a chapter with representative MRI and CT Scans, which are correlated with cross-sectional photographs of brain slices . The atlas also contains several high-quality labeled angiograms. Another innovative feature pertains to Chapter 7 . This chapter is a synopsis of functional components, and contains both neurochemical/neurotransmitter information, and clinical correlations . This is an extensive chapter, comprising fully 25% of the book . This chapter also has several "blank master drawings" which allow the student to take notes on an outline drawing, or to selfevaluate their knowledge . Another strong feature of this book is the index . It has literally thousands of entries, which serve to make finding material in the book quite easy . All of these features serve to provide a useful book for students, a stated objective by the author . To that end, the cost of the book is only $27 .95, a true bargain by today's standards . This book represents the dedication of the author to provide a tool which is valuable not only to medical students, but also to allied health students, residents, and practicing physicians, and can be highly recommended .
