This paper outlines the development of piezoelectric axle load sensors carried by the Transport Research Group at Nottingham University. It describes the latest developments in sensor design and the use of a new polymer cable for the active element. This research and development has led to the successful development of Automatic Weight and Axle Classification Systems (AWACS).
