Efficient 3-D Subband Coding of Colour Video

Publisher Summary The aim of this chapter is to present a simple and fast technique for video sequences coding at bit rates about 150 kbps. This technique facilitates low-priced video applications. It consists of two basic elements: (1) well-known 3D sub-band analysis and synthesis, and (2) novel sub-band coding technique. For the inter-frame sub-band analysis and synthesis, the simple Haar wavelets are good enough. On the other hand, for the intra-frame analysis and synthesis, one uses the highly efficient recursive filter banks. The proposed sub-band coding technique uses the base sub-band of the low-temporary subsequence in a simple detector of the scene moving areas. Information in other sub-bands is coded only in the areas related to significant movements. The most important feature of the proposed technique is its simplicity.
