Colorblind is perhaps the least accurate way to describe the justice system. A deep and rich literature documents these disparities and their causes (Alexander 2012; Butler 2018). A central aim of this issue is to map the ways that the Plessy decision has sustained and entrenched the systemic racial injustice and racism that structures much of social, economic, and political life in the United States.
