Main Idea Identification: Instructional Explanations in Four Basal Reader Series

All explanations and directives related to main idea identification were classified and evaluated in four current basal reader series. Results across the four series demonstrate that explanations tend to evade admittedly difficult issues of determining importance. Reasons for this finding are discussed. Results for directives replicate previous researchers' findings.
