Commission on Diagnostic Strategies Recommendations for Functional Neuroimaging of Persons with Epilepsy

The ILAE has recently produced recommendations for the neuroimaging of persons with epilepsy (1) and on the role of neuroimaging in presurgical evaluation (2). The advances in structural imaging over the last 15 years, especially the development of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging o, necessitate a reevaluation of the roles of the traditional functional imaging techniques of positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in clinical practice and research. The place of these methods, and of the emerging MR-based functional imaging methods of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) also need to be considered in the light of structural imaging data.
