Design and Implementation of a Mobile Device for Blood Glucose Level Assessment

In this paper, we propose a framework that caters for diabetic patients in the UAE. The system integrates a small and lightweight wearable device in the form of a watch with a mobile application to aid in the analysis of blood glucose level. Diabetes is considered a challenge for both the medical expert and the patient. Currently, the existing devices utilised by diabetic people are bulky and not portable. The inconvenience of such devices creates the need to propose a compact and reliable solution to measure the glucose level in the blood. The multipurpose user-friendly features of the accompanying mobile application presents users with a glycemic index calculator based on user-inputted recipes. Moreover, it predicts the blood glucose level trends upon consumption of certain ingredients and based on earlier trends and presents them to the user in the form of time-stamped graphs; ensuring that the patient is aware of his glucose levels. Furthermore, users are informed to take their medications on predefined intervals through push notifications. The device itself is designed to function as a colour-coded blood glucose indicator that ranges from very high to very low. To prove the efficiency of our system, we tested the device on patients with different glucose levels. Our results validate the usefulness of this framework to a function as a means of awareness and detection of the glucose level in the blood.
