Naval Maneuvering Research and the Need for Shear Stress Measurements (Invited)

†† An overview is given of some of the submarine and surface ship research conducted at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. The paper is presented in a session detailing novel shear stress measurement techniques. The goal, therefore, is to describe a few selected research problems sufficiently to indicate why there exists a need for shear stress measurements. Shear stress sensors are desired not only for laboratory-scale models, but also for quarter-scale vehicles operating in a fresh water lake and for full-scale vehicles operating in the oceans. The paper, therefore, includes a discussion of the potential demands that would be placed on candidate shear stress sensing systems under these conditions.
