ROAD READY: A SCHOOL BASED SAFETY PROGRAM IN THE ACT

The crash problems of young drivers have been well documented. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is undertaking an innovative and holistic approach in response to the issue. The project aims to establish safe attitudes and behaviours in new drivers. It also expects to motivate young people to drive within their bounds. The bottom line also includes the achievement of a significant reduction in serious crashes involving 17-25 year olds over the next 5-10 years. The project's early research stage recommended not only a school based program but also a broad based approach which includes a range of systematic changes and a learning partnership approach between parents and driving instructors. This paper will report on some of the tensions and successes during the development and implementation of the ACT Novice Driver Project into ACT schools.
