IPPV Flow Pattern Optimization by Using a Computer Technique.

A mathematical model of respiratory system has been used to optimize the parameters (duration of inspiration, duration of post - inspiratory pause and maximum value of inspiratory flow at mouth), which characterize four theoretical inspiratory flow patterns, as regards two different categories of patients in intermittent positive pressure ventilation. The principle we have based on to establish the parameters characterizing the optimal flow patterns has been founded on the minimization of a function accounting both for the gas exchange in the lungs and the effects of the intermittent positive pressure ventilation on the venous return. The results bring to important conclusions concerning the way how to ventilate the different categories of patients in the course of respiratory treatment.
