What IS can do for Environmental Sustainability

Concern about the environmental impact of human activities is ever increasing and several efforts have been initiated globally to reduce energy consumption and to increase energy efficiency. At a European level, a number of initiatives exist under the "Energy 2020" label which identifies the energy priorities for the period up to 2020. In December 2008 the European Council and Parliament adopted the Climate and Energy Package that reinforces Europe’s commitment to: • A reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions of at least 20% below 1990 levels • Source 20% of EU energy from renewable resources • A 20% reduction in primary energy use compared with projected levels, to be achieved by improving energy efficiency.
