Dual Arm Patch Antenna for Wideband Applications Using Metamaterial

In this paper, a dual arm patch antenna for wideband applications has been presented using metamaterial. The proposed antenna has a percentage impedance bandwidth (S11 < −10 dB) of 65.1 % (at center frequency of 3.7 GHz). The proposed structure consists of two arms having rectangular patch etched with complimentary split ring resonator (CSRR) while ground plane is partial. The fabricated structure has substrate dimensions of 40 × 40 × 1.6 mm3 and radiating element size of 2 × (10 × 14 mm2) showing compact size and meets various wireless standards such as WLAN, Wi-Fi and WiMAX. Wideband characteristic is obtained by combining two hybrid modes of patch and a resonant mode exhibited by CSRR which is etched on the rectangular patch. The metamaterial-inspired dual-arm patch antenna exhibits monopole-like radiation patterns in xz-plane and dipolar-type in xy-plane with an average gain of 2.31 dB and an average radiation efficiency of 94.8 % in the working band.
