Power-Factor-Correction with Power Decoupling for AC-to-DC Converter

To prolong the lifetime of electronic circuits by excluding the electrolytic capacitor, this paper attempts to develop a power-factor-correction (PFC) circuit for ac-to-dc converters based on boost conversion with power decoupling. An inductor with two active power switches is introduced to the conventionally used boost converter as a pumped-storage energy tank for storing the energy from the ac input at the higher voltages and pumping it back at the lower voltages to accomplish the functions of PFC and voltage regulation. Experimental results have demonstrated that the PFC circuit with a metalized film capacitor as the output filter can achieve an input power factor higher than 0.99 and a total harmonic distortion (THD) less than 12%.
