Development of peer interactions of monkeys reared in a nuclear-family environment.

RUPPENTHAL, G. C.; HARLOW, M. K.; EISELE, C. D.; HARLOw, H. F.; and Suoux, S. J. Development of Peer Interactions of Monkeys Reared in a Nuclear-Family Environment. CmLD DEVELOPMENT, 1974, 45, 670-682. Rhesus monkeys were reared for the first 3 yr of life in a nuclear-family environment which permitted continual access to their mothers and fathers and limited access to peers and to other adults of both sexes. The subjects rapidly developed sophisticated patterns of social behavior seldom observed in laboratory-reared monkeys and maintained levels of interactive play longer chronologically than has been reported for feralraised monkeys. Sex differences with respect to grooming and play behaviors emerged early in life and were maintained by the present subjects. Implications of the findings are discussed.
